NOS ENFANTS NOUS ACCUSERONT (That Should Not Be)

Jean-Paul Jaud, in french (France, 2008, 112 min.) (G)

Nos enfants nous accuserons

In Europe every year 100,000 children die of diseases caused by the environment. 70% of cancers are linked to the environment: 30% to pollution, 40% to food. In Europe cases of cancer have been increasing by 1.1% yearly for 30 years. In France the number of cancers in males has increased by 93% in 25 years.

In a little French community at the foot of the Cévennes Mountains, the mayor has decided to take a stance by making the school canteen organic. Here as everywhere, people are confronted with the anxiety of the dangers of industrial and agro-chemical pollution. It's the start of a fight against a process that could become irreversible, a fight to stop our children accusing us in the future.

THE WATER CRISIS - with a discussion animated by Walter Miale

Maude Barlow (Canada, 2008, 48 min.)

The Water Crisis

Nobel-prize nominee Maude Barlow summarizes a grave and still little-known crisis: Water resources are being used at about 15 times a rate that can be replenished by rainfall. As zones of drought spread, water and water services are being privatized and monopolized. Around the world, fresh water is becoming scarce, yet water is being massively extracted from communities and bulk-shipped across national borders by supertanker and pipeine for commercial purposes.
In this video, Barlow makes an eloquent appeal for water to be enshrined as a human right, and she sets out an agenda for ordinary citizens to keep this right.
"We are at the cusp of a massive change in our view of water, from a common good to the private ownership of cartels who will sell it on the open market to those who can afford it. Those who can't will die" - Maude Barlow
"The global water crisis is the first face of climate change. Protecting our water sources is as crucial as curbing greenhouse gas emissions. Maude Barlow has for decades been a leading voice for water sustainability and justice." - David Suzuki
